Georgian Bay - Installment #1

Some editing has occurred.  Here's the first batch.

We spent a good bit of time on the first night searching for the Grey Treefrogs that were calling by the campsite. I didn't find any, but fortunately someone had better eyes than me!

I also nearly stepped on the tiniest Green Frog I'd ever seen!

Green Frog (Lithobates clamitans melanota)

We didn't find very many reptiles the following day, probably because of the rain and cool temperatures, but we did see this cool robber fly!

Robber Fly (Family: Asilidae)

On the second day we did find a few snakes in the fleeting moments of sun, one of which was this stumpy Brown Snake.  She was missing pretty much all of her tail, but seemed to be doing really well.  She looked quite robust and healthy!

Northern Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi dekayi)

That's it for now, installment #2 is on the way!

Georgian Bay

Spent a rainy weekend on Georgian Bay.  The weather put a definite damper on herping, but I did end up with a few decent shots.  Here's a quick preview:

Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus)

Too tired to edit more tonight, but will post soon!

Incidentally, this is my 100th blog post (woohoo?).

Purple

Not too many photos recently - I really do seem to go in fits and starts, which I suppose are dictated by work and other commitments.  I will be spending this weekend in a magical place though, and I expect there to be many photos next week :).

In the meantime, here's a grab-shot from the other day.  Not much for a stimulating background, but you've gotta shoot 'em where they are!

Red-spotted Purple (Leminitis arthemis)

More to come soon I hope!

More MacGregor Photos

Here's a handful more from last weekend at MacGregor.

Chalk-fronted Corporal (Ladona julia)

Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta)

Eastern Red Damsel (Amphiagrion saucium)

Northern Crescent (Phycoides cocyta)

Northern Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens pipiens)

Yellow Lady's Slipper (Cypripedium pubescens)

Perhaps the coolest find of the weekend was this crazy aquatic insect, trekking (in a very ungainly fashion) across a trail between two marshy areas.

Predaceous Diving Beetle larva (Family: Dytiscidae)

That's all for now!

Arrgghh!

Ugh...just got back from a lovely weekend at MacGregor Point Provincial Park, and after 10 minutes of panic realized that I left my entire bag of camera gear in the park Visitors Centre!  Man I'm smart!  Clearly I've just got so much money that my camera is disposable...

Anyway, I did take lots of pictures, which I'll put up as soon as I get the camera back (which is hopefully soon!!).

Correction!

Almost caught with my pants down there!  Metaphorically of course.  Fortunately nobody called me on it.  In previous post, the female "Twelve-spotted Skimmer" should read "Common Whitetail".  Will make necessary correction.

More Dragonflies

Here are some more photos from yesterday at The Arboretum.  Four-spotted Skimmer was definitely the species of the day - they were everywhere!

There were a few others around as well - variety is the spice of life after all.

Dot-tailed Whiteface (Leucorrhinia intacta)

Common Whitetail (Plathemis lydia)

That's all for now.  Off to Lake Huron this weekend, so hopefully I'll have some more soon!

Finally Some Photos!

Well I have been far too long from the camera - busy couple of weeks I suppose.  Decided to get out to the Guelph Arboretum for a pre-work stroll this morning.  I was excited to find quite a few dragonflies up and flying, even though it was quite cool.  I took a bunch of photos that look ok at first glance...hopefully I will get some time to edit them soon.  Here's one quick one just to show that I really did take some pictures :).

More to come soon!
